Are Dental Implants Part of Prosthodontics?

Posted on 1/23/2023 by Dr. Castellon
Are Dental Implants Part of Prosthodontics?Dental implants are surgical fixtures attached to the jawbone and fuse with the jaw bone over a specific period. Prosthodontics focuses on replacing missing or extracted teeth, and implants act as a replacement for the roots of the missing teeth. This is a clear indication that dental implants are indeed part of prosthodontics.

Implants hold the replacement teeth or bridge in place, which mimics natural teeth since they stand independently without affecting the remaining surrounding teeth. Since implants are made from various dental materials that resemble natural teeth, they can easily integrate with the bone without rejection or other complications.

How Dental Implants Work

When a patient has artificial teeth placed, implants are vital in holding the teeth in place by providing sufficient support. Dental experts mount bridges or dentures to implants to prevent them from slipping or shifting inside the mouth. The primary purpose of placing various prostheses on implants is to enhance the feel to be more natural than dentures and bridges.

Ordinary dentures and bridges are uncomfortable due to the spots, sores, gagging, and poor ridges. However, this is not a concern with implants since there's no need for adjustments in the nearby teeth to support the replacement teeth or prostheses. It is advisable to consult a dental expert to determine whether you meet the qualifications to have implants placed. Patients are required to have healthy gums and sufficient bone mass that can support the implant without compromising the patient's overall oral health.

Two types of implants are considered safe by dental practitioners, and these include endosteal implants and subperiosteal implants, which are used under different dental circumstances. If you consider having missing teeth replaced, it is advisable to consult a professional and get the necessary information and assessment before implants are placed.
