What Are Dental Bridges, and Who Needs Them?

Overview of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges can help to replace either one tooth or multiple teeth and are comprised of artificial teeth and crowns. Our dentists help to create bridges that mimic the shade of your other teeth. These teeth replacement options have two parts: pontics and abutments. Abutments offer adequate support for your bridge; they are connector posts. Pontics, on the other hand, are false teeth that help fill the gap left by the lost teeth.

You can choose from different types of bridges. Traditional bridges are the most popular and have a crown and pontic. Maryland bridges are another type of bridge used to replace your front teeth; they use metal or porcelain frameworks and are bonded at the back of your teeth. Another common type is implant-supported bridges, where implants are surgically placed on your jawbone to support the bridges. Lastly, we have cantilever bridges anchored only on one side.

Installation of Dental Bridges

The dental bridge installation process starts with the administration of local anesthesia. The next process is the reshaping of the abutment teeth that will offer support to the bridge. We then take dental impressions to create a bridge that suits your needs. Making the final dental bridge can take an average of two to four weeks, so we will first place a temporary bridge as you await.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Bridges?

Anyone with one missing tooth or multiple teeth is a good candidate for these teeth replacement options. However, we need to evaluate your dental health to ensure you are a suitable candidate. For dental bridges to be ideal, you must meet criteria such as having missing teeth, hgreat oral health, and healthy teeth on each side. Our dentist will evaluate your dental health situation and recommend the best bridge option for you.
