Are Dentures Better Than They Used to Be?

Dentures have a long history in dentistry, dating back centuries. You might have heard the story of George Washington and his wooden teeth or seen images of teeth stored in bowls of water - those represent early forms of dentures. Today, dentures offer a comfortable, visually appealing, and easy-to-maintain solution for tooth loss.

Why Modern Dentures Are Much Better Than They Used to Be

They Do Not Fall Out

Modern dentures do not fall out in the same way that older dentures do. The advancements in dental technology have made it possible for dentists to secure dentures to the mouth using implants. You need about two dental implants to keep modern dentures in place securely. Securing dentures in places prevents them from falling out and improves their function and aesthetic qualities.

They Are Not Made of Wood

In the 16th century, dentists made dentures using wood. The result was a fixed smile that was obviously artificial and unreal. Today, dentists use acrylic resin or porcelain to make dentures. Porcelain is translucent and the same color as natural teeth. Its durability also means that you can do anything you would with natural teeth.

Improved Dental Base

Modern dentures are also better than their older counterparts because the dental base that keeps it inside your mouth has improved. Modern dentures are implant-supported, anchored directly to your jaws using implants. The material used to make the dental base has also changed, and modern dentures have depth and texture that mimics natural gum tissue.

Modern Dentures Are Customized

In the past, dentists did not have the means to achieve perfectly fitting dentures. The creation of dentures was a trial-and-error process that used mathematical ratios to define and shape each tooth. Currently, the quality of the material used and the impressions taken of the teeth allow cosmetic dentists to make dentures that perfectly meet individual needs.

Closing Remarks

Today, you cannot tell if someone has natural teeth or dentures. Modern dentures are much better than they used to be, from aesthetics to durability and a smile that looks as good as natural. Call us today and schedule a visit if you would like dentures fitted.
