Ways to Remove Denture Odors

Image of close up smile. Dentures are a great way to restore your smile and improve your oral health. However, they can also be a source of frustration, especially when they start to develop an odor. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to keep your dentures fresh and odor-free.

Causes of Denture Odor

There are several factors that can contribute to denture odor. These include:

•  Food particles: Food particles can get trapped in the crevices of your dentures, where they can decompose and produce an unpleasant odor.
•  Bacteria: Bacteria can also build up on your dentures, especially if they are not cleaned properly. This bacteria can also contribute to odor.
•  Dry mouth: Dry mouth can make it more difficult to keep your dentures clean, as saliva helps to wash away food particles and bacteria.
•  Smoking: Smoking can stain your dentures and make them more likely to develop an odor.
•  Poor denture fit: Dentures that don't fit properly can trap food and bacteria, which can lead to odor.

Preventing Denture Odor

The best way to prevent denture odor is to practice good oral hygiene. This includes:

•  Brushing your dentures regularly: Brush your dentures at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a denture cleanser. Be sure to brush all surfaces of your dentures, including the inside.
•  Soaking your dentures overnight: Soak your dentures in a denture cleaning solution overnight. This will help to kill bacteria and remove food particles.
•  Cleaning your mouth: Brush your gums, tongue, and palate with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste. This will help to remove bacteria and food particles that can contribute to odor.
•  Seeing your dentist regularly: See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can check your dentures for fit and make sure that they are not causing any problems.

Removing Denture Odor

If your dentures have already developed an odor, there are a few things you can do to remove it. These include:

•  Using a denture cleaning solution: There are many different denture cleaning solutions available over-the-counter. Be sure to choose a solution that is specifically designed for dentures.
•  Soaking your dentures in vinegar: Soaking your dentures in white vinegar for 30 minutes can help to remove odor-causing bacteria.
•  Using baking soda: Baking soda is a natural deodorizer. You can make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to your dentures with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
•  Using denture adhesive: Denture adhesive can help to create a barrier between your dentures and your gums, which can help to prevent odor-causing bacteria from building up.

Conclusion

Denture odor can be a frustrating problem, but it is usually preventable and treatable. By following the tips above, you can keep your dentures fresh and odor-free. If you have any concerns about denture odor, be sure to talk to your dentist.
