What Wears Down Dental Bonding?

Posted on 9/1/2025 by Dallas Prosthodontics
Female patient getting dental bonding. Dental bonding is a popular cosmetic dentistry option that can improve the appearance of your smile. It's a versatile procedure that can be used to fix chipped teeth, close gaps between teeth, and even change the shape of your teeth. But like any dental restoration, dental bonding isn't permanent and will eventually need to be replaced.

So, what are the things that can wear down dental bonding and shorten its lifespan? Here are a few common culprits:

1. Poor Oral Hygiene:

Just like your natural teeth, dental bonding needs to be kept clean to prevent staining and decay. Poor oral hygiene habits can lead to plaque buildup, which can weaken the bond between the composite resin and your tooth. This can cause the bonding to chip, crack, or even fall off.

2. Hard Foods and Beverages:

Biting down on hard foods like nuts, ice, or candy can put stress on your dental bonding and cause it to chip or break. Similarly, acidic foods and drinks like citrus fruits and soda can erode the bonding material, making it more susceptible to wear and tear.

3. Bruxism (Teeth Grinding):

If you grind your teeth at night, you're putting a lot of extra force on your dental bonding. Over time, this can cause the bonding to wear down and chip. If you suspect you have bruxism, talk to your dentist about getting a nightguard to protect your teeth.

4. Habits and Behaviors:

Certain habits can also take a toll on your dental bonding. Biting your nails, chewing on pencils, or using your teeth to open packages can all chip or crack the bonding material.

5. Time:

Like all dental restorations, dental bonding is not meant to last forever. Even with good care, dental bonding will eventually need to be replaced, typically after 5-10 years.

Prevention is Key:

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to extend the life of your dental bonding:
•  Practice good oral hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily to remove plaque and food debris.
•  Avoid hard foods and beverages: Stick to a diet of soft foods and avoid acidic foods and drinks.
•  Treat bruxism: If you grind your teeth, talk to your dentist about getting a nightguard.
•  Break bad habits: Avoid biting your nails, chewing on pencils, or using your teeth for anything other than eating.
•  See your dentist regularly: Schedule regular checkups and cleanings to ensure your dental bonding is in good condition.

By following these tips, you can help keep your dental bonding looking its best and minimize the need for repairs or replacements.

Remember:

Dental bonding is a great way to improve your smile, but it's important to remember that it's not a permanent solution. With proper care and a commitment to preventive dentistry, you can extend the life of your dental bonding and enjoy a beautiful smile for years to come.
