What to Do About Denture Sores

Posted on 10/1/2025 by Dallas Prosthodontics
Denture sores are a common problem that can affect anyone who wears dentures. They are often caused by ill-fitting dentures, poor oral care, or other factors such as infection, trauma, or allergies.

Denture sores can be painful and uncomfortable, making it difficult to eat, speak, and even sleep. In some cases, they can also lead to infection.

What Are Denture Sores?

A denture sore, also called a denture stomatitis, is an irritated or inflamed area of the gums, palate, or other tissues in your mouth caused by wearing dentures. They are often red, swollen, and tender, and may bleed easily.

Denture sores can occur in various forms, such as:

- Single, localized sore: These are usually small, round, or oval sores that appear in one specific spot.

- Generalized soreness: This type of soreness affects a larger area of the mouth and may be accompanied by a burning sensation.

- Linear sore: These sores appear as long, thin lines along the edges of the denture.

- Hyperplasia: This refers to an overgrowth of tissue, often appearing as a red, bumpy patch.

While denture sores are usually not serious, they can be quite painful and lead to complications if left untreated.

What Causes Denture Sores?

Several factors can contribute to the development of denture sores:
•  Ill-fitting dentures: Dentures that don't fit properly can rub against the gums and cause irritation. Over time, this irritation can lead to sores.
•  Poor oral hygiene: Poor oral hygiene can allow bacteria to build up on the dentures and in the mouth. This bacteria can irritate the gums and lead to sores.
•  Trauma: Trauma to the mouth, such as from a fall or biting down on something hard, can also cause denture sores.
•  Infection: Fungal or bacterial infections can cause denture stomatitis, often appearing as white patches or redness in the mouth.
•  Allergies: Some people are allergic to the materials used in dentures, which can cause sores.
•  Other medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or HIV/AIDS, can make people more susceptible to developing denture sores.

How Can Denture Sores Be Prevented?

Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to help prevent denture sores:
•  Ensure proper fit of your dentures: Regularly visit your prosthodontist to ensure your dentures fit correctly.
•  Practice good oral hygiene: Brush your dentures and your mouth thoroughly after every meal.
•  Remove your dentures at night: This allows your gums to rest and helps prevent the buildup of bacteria.
•  See your prosthodontist regularly: Regular checkups allow your prosthodontist to identify and address any potential issues before they become serious.

How Are Denture Sores Treated?

Treatment for denture sores will depend on the underlying cause. If the sores are caused by an ill-fitting denture, your prosthodontist may need to adjust the denture.

For sores caused by poor oral hygiene, your prosthodontist will likely recommend improving your cleaning routine and may prescribe an antifungal or antibacterial rinse.

If an infection is causing the sores, antibiotics or antifungal medications may be necessary. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort, and in some cases, a topical anesthetic may be applied directly to the sores.

Conclusion

Denture sores are a common problem, but they are usually not serious and can often be prevented with good oral care and regular visits to your prosthodontist. If you experience denture sores, be sure to see your prosthodontist to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.
