5 Rules to Better Care for Your Dentures

Think of them like a valued part of you – because they are! Proper care will not only keep them looking great but will also help maintain your overall oral health and prevent potential problems. Here are five simple rules to help you keep your dentures in tip-top shape:

Rule #1: Handle with Care

Dentures, while durable, are still delicate. Dropping them, even from a short height, can cause them to crack or break. Always handle your dentures with care, especially when cleaning them. The best practice is to clean them over a sink filled with water or a soft towel. This way, if they slip, they'll land on something soft instead of the hard sink surface.

Rule #2: Clean Daily (Like Real Teeth!)

Just like your natural teeth, dentures need daily cleaning. Food particles and plaque can build up, leading to bad breath, staining, and even gum irritation. Use a soft-bristled denture brush and a denture cleaner (not regular toothpaste, which can be abrasive). Gently brush all surfaces of your dentures, paying close attention to areas that come into contact with your gums. Rinse them thoroughly with water after brushing. It is important to practice good oral care by cleaning your gums and tongue with a soft toothbrush or washcloth to remove bacteria.

Rule #3: Soak Them Overnight

Dentures need to stay moist to maintain their shape and fit. When you're not wearing them, store them in a denture-soaking solution or plain water. This helps prevent them from drying out and warping. Change the solution daily to keep it fresh. Some soaking solutions also have antibacterial properties that can help kill germs.

Rule #4: Regular Check-ups are Key

Even with the best home care, regular check-ups are essential. Your dentist can assess the fit of your dentures, check for any signs of irritation or infection in your mouth, and provide professional cleaning. Over time, your gums and jawbone can change, which can affect how your dentures fit. A poorly fitting denture can cause discomfort, sores, and even difficulty eating. Regular check-ups help identify and address these issues early. This is an important aspect of prevention dentistry.

Rule #5: Watch What You Eat

While you can eat most foods with dentures, some adjustments may be necessary. Avoid excessively sticky or hard foods that could damage or dislodge your dentures. Cut food into smaller pieces and chew evenly on both sides of your mouth. This will help distribute the pressure and prevent uneven wear on your dentures. Remember, it may take some time to get used to eating with dentures, so be patient with yourself.
