Do You Need to Treat Dental Crowns Differently than Teeth?

Good oral hygiene is always important. Keeping your mouth clean can prevent future problems and possible procedures. We all see the commercials on TV showing dentures soaking in a cleaning solution. Here is a better understanding on how to take care of a crown.

Taking Care of a New Crown

A crown is usually used to cover up a tooth that can't be filled and to prevent decay. Once the crown is put on top of the other tooth it will completely cover your existing tooth all the way to the gum line.

A permanent crown will be cemented to your tooth. It can be cleaned the same way as your other teeth. Because bacteria can build up between the crown and the gum line it is important to brush two times a day and floss once a day. Rinsing with mouthwash will help keep them in good shape also.

A crown can also be used to attach a partial bridge. In that case your dentist will help you out with tricks on how to carefully remove it and put it back in. Cleaning those pieces will need special care. You'll want to make sure that you clean them with a soft bristle toothbrush or denture brush and use denture toothpaste. Regular toothpaste can scratch your partial.

It's a good thing to keep in mind that nothing can replace real teeth. Some things you may want to stay away from right away will be hard foods. Hard food can cause them to break. Chewing gum can also cause a crown to come out. Your dentist can definitely help teach you how to properly clean your new teeth.

Make sure you continue regular office visits. Remember, you still have a tooth under there. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call your dentist's office today.
