Could Overdentures Help You Restore Your Smile?

Missing teeth do more than just alter your smile. Without your teeth, your ability to eat properly is affected, as is your speech. Chewing becomes difficult, which can affect your overall health.

You may find that people have a hard time understanding you when you talk. Not only that, but you may become self-conscious. If you are missing teeth, overdentures may be the solution for you.

What are Overdentures?

Unlike traditional dentures, which are removable prosthetic teeth that are supported by your gums, overdentures are a permanent solution, supported by dental implants.

Implants are small titanium rods that are surgically implanted into your jawbone. As the sites heal, the rods fuse with the bone, providing strong, stable "roots" to which the overdentures are affixed.

Benefits of Overdentures

Overdentures offer a variety of benefits:

•  You can eat your favorite foods again. Not only that, but having a full mouth of teeth promotes better digestion, which improves your overall health.
•  Your speech is improved.
•  Prevents bone loss. When you are missing teeth, your jawbone begins to deteriorate, which eventually alters the shape of your jaw and your face. Implants imitate tooth roots, helping to prevent reabsorption.
•  More comfortable. Traditional dentures rest on your gums, and can rub, leading to denture sores. They also limit blood and oxygen flow. Overdentures are supported by the implants, so they don't rub and they allow your blood to flow freely through the gum tissues.
•  Regain your confidence. With a full, beautiful smile, you will be more than happy to smile once again.

Are You a Candidate?
While overdentures are fast becoming one of the top preferred tooth replacement options, not everyone is a candidate. You may be a good candidate if:

•  You have good oral and overall health.
•  You have sufficient bone mass remaining in your jaw.
•  You are a non-smoker, or are willing to quit, if not for good, at least for a time both before and after the procedure.

Missing teeth need to be replaced, not just for aesthetic reasons, but for health reasons as well. Ask your dentist to learn if overdentures are the best option for you.
