How Long Will Dentures Typically Last?

Your dentures, which are custom made from molds of your mouth, are designed to fit you perfectly. However, they cannot last forever. For most denture wearers, these prosthetic teeth typically last 5 to 7 years.

Why Do Dentures Only Last This Long?

Your teeth perform many important functions. One of these functions is to keep your jawbone strong and healthy. When you lose your teeth, your bone begins to resorb, and your jaw weakens.

This is a gradual process, and continues for the rest of your life. So, the dentures you were once fit for will no longer fit the same after this period of time.

What Happens If You Wear Your Dentures Too Long?

Wearing your dentures even though they no longer fit properly can lead to several issues:

•  Your dentures can become loose. This can lead to painful rubbing against your gum tissue.
•  Your dentures can fall out.
•  Eating becomes difficult, and digestion negatively impacted. This can then affect your overall health.
•  Accelerated bone loss, which can lead to premature aging.

Relining Your Dentures

In some cases, you don't always need to have your dentures completely replaced after 5 to 7 years. You may be able to have your dentures relined or rebased. This can save you the cost of a brand-new set of dentures. Your dentist will be able to help you determine the best course of action.

Signs It's Time to See Your Dentist

There are several signs to be on the lookout for, which can let you know it's time to see your dentist:

•  Irritated gums.
•  Denture sores.
•  Chewing is difficult.
•  Your dentures fall out while you are talking.
•  You might notice changes in your facial features.
•  You may be experiencing headaches, ear aches or neck aches.
