|Missing teeth is a common dental problem that affects millions of people around the world. For these people, the missing teeth can become embarrassing in social situations, not to mention make simple tasks such as eating problematic – for the people with several of them missing.
Fortunately, there exist several solutions to this problem, with the use of dentures being one of the best ones.
The dentures offer several benefits to the patient, but they have one major problem – stabilization. From time to time, they can feel (and even come) loose. However, there are a number of solutions for the stability problem – with the two most prominent ones being adhesives and suction cup dentures. In this post, we are going to look at both solutions to identify which is the best when it comes to holding the dentures down.
Suction Cup DenturesSuction cup dentures make use of suction, which grips the patients' oral tissue, thus providing a snug fit. The suction is generated by tiny suction cups found at the bottom surface of the dentures. Suction cup dentures can have a number of benefits, starting with the fact that they can be used for both mandibular and maxillary restorations.
They also work well with patients who have flat ridges. On the downside, they can feel uncomfortable due to the grip of the suction cups, particularly in the early days after getting new dentures.
Denture AdhesivesDenture adhesives are another solution for holding down dentures and providing a snug secure fit. They come in the form of pastes – but they can also be found as adhesive pads and powders. The adhesives are applied on the surface of the dentures, which are then placed on the oral tissues, snugly securing them.
They offer several benefits – from improved comfort to effortless speech, and an easier time eating. However, they come with some downsides, including increased maintenance requirements, contamination and possible damage by zinc (contained in most adhesives), and their messy nature (if the adhesive becomes runny).
Which is Better? Both suction cup dentures and denture adhesives are a great solution to the stability issue of dentures. Suction cups offer a natural solution, and they help to provide a snug fit. Adhesives, on the other hand, offer a guaranteed secure fit, and they can only come loose if there is a problem with a specific type of adhesive – or if it becomes runny and loose.
