There are a lot of restorative dental practices you may have never heard of. One of those practices is applying onlays to a cavity. Onlays can really improve the look of your smile. If you are not sure what an onlay is, let us take a few minutes of your time to talk to you about an onlay and why it benefits your smile.
What Is An Onlay?
Onlays are a way that we can fix a large cavity. Cavities are holes in your teeth that are created because of tooth decay. Tooth decay happens when bacteria eat away at your tooth enamel. Over time, the bacteria creates a hole in your tooth. If we get to the tooth decay early, we can fill the hole quickly, without too much damage to your tooth. However, if you aren't coming in to see us regularly, the cavity will continue to grow. Eventually, the cavity will move into your tooth pulp, which will cause you a lot of pain, especially when it reaches your nerve.
If we can catch the cavity, even if it is large, we can fix it and repair your smile. If the cavity is on a molar, we can use an onlay to repair the damage. Onlays are made of porcelain, and are cemented in place when a cavity is larger than a traditional filling but not large enough for a crown. With onlays, we are able to fix a cavity in your molar even when it involves the cusp of your tooth.
The procedure to use an onlay is simple. We make a mold of your tooth, so that the onlay will match it perfectly. Then we fill your cavity, and cement the onlay to restore the look of your tooth. Do you have questions about a cavity in your molars? Are you not sure if you need an onlay or not? We can help. Give us a call today, and let us answer your questions.
