Why Do You Need to Replace Dentures Every Few Years?
Posted on 7/23/2020 by Dr. Castellon
Have you seen the fake teeth at the costume store? Or remember a scene in a movie where someone takes their teeth out? This is a lot of people's introduction to dentures. Dentures are full or partial removable replacements for missing teeth. The most common ones are conventional and immediate dentures. Conventional dentures are ready for placement about 8-12 weeks after the teeth have been removed while immediate dentures are made in advance and can be placed immediately after the teeth are removed, hence their name.
Dentures do need to be replaced after a certain number of years. Sometimes they can be relined but they could also need to be completely remade. This is due to wearing them daily or changes in the shape of your mouth. Your gum and jawbone ridges can shrink over time, which causes your upper and lower jaw to align differently. This also means your dentures will become loose, leading to discomfort and oral problems.
If your dentures do not feel natural in your mouth or they look misaligned, it's time to replace them. It is recommended that patients consider replacing dentures at least every four to six years, but more common to replace them every five to ten years. Telltale signs that you need a replacement include misshapen dentures, discoloration, and a bad taste/odor. While any of these can cause additional dental problems, the bad taste and/or odor is indicative of bacterial growth, which can wreak havoc on your mouth and gums.
If you notice any of these signs, please contact our office to discuss your options. After all, you still need to care for your mouth and gums plus oral health affects your overall health. Even if you think you don't have any complications being proactive to prevent future ones is a safe bet.
