Is Sleeping with Dentures Safe?

Posted on 10/19/2020 by Dr. Castellon
Is Sleeping with Dentures Safe? Some people do not like the idea of taking their teeth out of their mouth at night or simply become lazy about making it a practice. However, to ensure your overall health, we strongly recommend that you take your dentures out at night and clean them. It really is not safe to leave your dentures in while you are sleeping. The following information will offer you more details about why this should not happen.

Why You Should Not Wear Your Dentures While Sleeping

While wearing dentures is meant to improve your quality of life, wearing the appliances too much can reduce it. Therefore, you need to always remove your dentures before you fall asleep at night. According to one study in the Journal of Dental Research, nursing home patients, who wore their dentures while sleeping, were up to three more times likely to die of pneumonia. Moreover, the risk of hospitalization substantially increased for other conditions or illnesses. The research found that pneumonia-causing bacteria from dentures can easily move to the lungs from the act of respiration. Therefore, when dentures are not taken out at night, they can become a danger to your overall health.

Other Health Problems that Can Develop

Another condition that may develop from the continual wearing of an upper denture is denture stomatitis, which is characterized by a palate that becomes inflamed and red. This is because the roof of the mouth is infected with yeast. The yeast microorganisms can also produce a condition called angular cheilitis, which infects cracks in the corners of the mouth. In addition, researchers noted that people who sleep with dentures have a higher amount of the Interleukin 6 protein in their blood. The presence of the substance shows that the body is working hard to fight off an infection.
