Do I Need to Change my Diet if I Have Dentures?

Posted on 2/8/2021 by Dr. Castellon
Do I Need to Change my Diet if I Have Dentures?Going through extensive tooth loss can be stressful as can choosing an appropriate artificial tooth solution. Once those decisions are made, most patients want to know how to make their appliance last as long as possible, so they do not have to pay the extra money to have it replaced. There are guidelines to be followed for proper care regarding any dental appliance. The most frequently chosen artificial tooth solution are dentures. They too have guidelines and instructions for proper care.

Types of Dentures

Partial dentures or dental bridges span an opening of a single missing tooth or a series of missing teeth. The bridge or partial can be secured to the existing teeth on either side of the opening. Full dentures replace the entire upper or lower set of teeth. They are made of plastic and formed to measurement specifications of the patient's mouth. These are held in place by the use of adhesive.

Some patients are nervous about wearing traditional dentures because they have heard that they slip and slide out of place and can be difficult to eat with. There are dental implant supported dentures too, which remove the adhesive from the equation. Dental implants are embedded into the jawbone and provide an excellent foundation for the dentures.

How to Take Care of My Dentures

Denture care is critical to make them last as long as possible. It is important to remove them and rinse them after each meal and to soak them overnight. This cuts down on the bacteria living on them and diminishes the chance for infection.

It is important to not eat acidic foods or hard foods which might damage the dentures. Since dentures are not as resilient as natural tooth enamel, Patients need to realize they have to take care of their dentures to help them last a long time.
