If you are new to wearing dentures, you must know that there's an adjustment period at the start that typically lasts for a few weeks. The purpose of this period is to give the wearer time to adjust to their new dentures as well as to learn everything about them in terms of cleaning, caring, and how to wear them properly.
It definitely takes a while for beginners to adjust to dentures; however, it's nothing impossible. You just need to follow the instructions given by your dentist, and you are good to go.
At Dallas Prosthodontics, Dr. Castellon and Dr. Buskin always give their patients the following tips to help them adjust to new dentures faster without any problems. Take a look.
Take Small bites and Eat Slowly
One of the biggest problems posed by dentures is discomfort when eating food. So, to prevent uneasiness when chewing or biting your food, it is best if you take small bites and eat slowly.
Cut your food into small, bite-sized pieces so that you can chew it properly without feeling any pain. At the same time, try to determine the amount of pressure you need to exert when you chew.
Begin with Soft Foods
When you are new to dentures, you might have to do a little experimentation in terms of eating certain foods. It is best to start with soft foods such as mashed potatoes, yogurt, and pudding because these foods don't put any pressure on your gums or teeth. Once you start getting used to the new dentures, then you can move on to other foods.
Use the Side or Back Teeth for Biting Food
One of the biggest mistakes you can make when you have new dentures is biting food with your front teeth. Doing this can cause your dentures to become loose in the back. So, it is ideal if you bite down with either the back teeth or the ones on the side.
