Do You Have Choices When It Comes To Dental Crowns?

Posted on 6/21/2021 by Weo Admin
Do You Have Choices When It Comes To Dental Crowns? If you have a dental crack or chipping that fillings cannot fix, you need a crown to restore your tooth. Also, if you have severe tooth decay, you may need a root canal to save your natural tooth, after which we will place a crown on your tooth to protect it from further damage. When selecting your crown, you should consult with us for the best material, depending on your teeth' status. Making an informed decision will ensure a sustainable solution and save you on cost. You can choose among the types of dental crowns, which include metal, porcelain fused to metal, and all-ceramic crowns.

Metal Crowns

Commonly used metals to make crowns include nickel, gold, and palladium. Metals make strong and durable crowns that can withstand strong chewing and biting. They also require a small amount of the enamel removed to place them. However, metals are only ideal for premolars and molars, given that their color does not blend with natural teeth.

Porcelain-Fused-To-Metal Crowns

Unlike metallic crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can be matched to the color of natural teeth, making them ideal for both front and back teeth. However, the porcelain portion of this crown can easily chip or break. Also, teeth fitted with these crowns wear down the opposing teeth when they come into contact with them.

All Ceramic Crowns

All-ceramic crowns are the best type of crown since their color that easily blends with natural teeth. This makes them the best choice for front teeth. Also, if you have a metal allergy, these crowns are the best choice. However, they are weaker compared to the above types of crowns and cannot withstand high pressure. They can also wear down the opposing teeth when they come into contact with them. Depending on your teeth' status and position, we will recommend any of the above types of crowns. However, you should note that your teeth will remain in good condition with good oral hygiene, eliminating the need for a crown. For more details on dental crowns, contact our office today.
