What to Do If Your Dentures Start to Slip or Hurt?

Posted on 8/23/2021 by Dr. Castellon
What to Do If Your Dentures Start to Slip or Hurt?Dentures replace lost natural teeth and require some effort before you get used to them. After getting new dentures, it is common for them to slip out of position when you smile, cough, or laugh. This can also happen when you are chewing or talking. However, with time, you will learn how to maintain your dentures in position using your tongue and cheek muscles. However, before getting used to your new dentures, you can deal with slippage or pain using denture adhesives or see us for adjustment.

Denture Adhesives

Denture adhesives hold dentures in place and prevent slippage. They come in handy, especially if the slippage is happening on new dentures and you are having a difficult time learning how to hold them with your oral muscles. For this reason, if you have old dentures, you should consult us before using adhesives as age, wear and tear, among other factors, could cause the slippage. When using denture adhesives to deal with slippage and pain, use the recommended prescription.

See us For Adjustments

Your dentures could slip or hurt due to a poor fit. A change in denture fit could result from gum and jawbone wear. It could also result from denture wear where your dentures are either warped or damaged. Poorly fitting dentures will move around the gums and mouth, hurting your soft tissues. If your dentures cause sores on your mouth, you risk developing severe oral infections caused by harmful mouth bacteria. Therefore, if your pain and slippage continue after using denture adhesives, you should see us for further examination. If, after a checkup, we find out the slippage and tenderness are due to changes in your gum and bone density, we will adjust or replace your dentures.
