Tips for Making Talking with a New Set of Dentures Easier
Posted on 8/9/2021 by Dr. Castellon
Patients who get dentures may find it difficult to talk at first. After all, dentures fit inside the mouth differently than regular teeth. Therefore, you need to get used to speaking with the prostheses.
Bite and Swallow Before You Talk
To speak clearly, you need to bite and swallow first to position your dentures. Affix your dentures with a denture adhesive to prevent any slips. Even when you bite and swallow, you may notice your dentures click. If this happens, you are speaking too fast. Your muscles in your cheeks, tongue, and lips naturally respond by trying to push out the dentures. However, speaking more slowly will help you adapt.
Read Out Loud
When you first have dentures, it helps to read passages from books out loud. Doing so will help you eventually to speak more confidently and communicate with ease. To help you with pronouncing more difficult-sounding words, count out loud from 60 to 90. Many first-time denture wearers have trouble when pronouncing Ss or Fs. However, don't despair, as practicing speaking will eventually lead to talking without concern.
Don't Worry About How You Sound
The worst thing you can do is to worry about how you sound to others. Dentures are designed to give you more self-confidence, not make you feel like you cannot speak or talk. If you have trouble enunciating words, it's a natural thing and is just part of a small learning curve – one that will lead to better speaking and enhanced communication over time.
