Some New Denture Wearers Make These Common Mistakes – Do You?
Posted on 11/8/2021 by Dr. Castellon
Getting dentures for the first time can be an exciting experience. However, you need to take good care of your dentures to prevent damage and possible oral infections. New denture wearers tend to make; some of them include poor brushing habits, not soaking them overnight, and eating hard foods.
Poor Brushing Habits
Dentures need daily brushing, just like your natural teeth. This is important because food particles get lodged underneath the dentures, and soaking won't be enough to remove them. Given that dentures are mostly brushed before bedtime, some wearers brush them poorly because they are tired and want to sleep. This is a serious mistake that you should avoid. You should brush dentures keenly and thoroughly. Remember to brush every part of your dentures to get rid of bacteria and stuck food particles.
Not Soaking the Dentures Overnight
Another common mistake new denture wearers make is not soaking them overnight. It is very important and necessary to soak dentures before going to bed. You should soak them in a special denture solution that kills bacteria. Soaking also makes them moist to avoid the hardening of their materials. Keep in mind that when denture materials harden, they could break easily. You are warned against hastily putting your dentures in running water in the morning because it won't be effective. Doing the opposite also increases the risk of infections because germs are likely to accumulate on your dentures. As a result, you could develop conditions like gum disease.
Eating Hard Foods
During the first few weeks of wearing dentures, your mouth is still adjusting to dentures. During this time, you should stick to eating soft foods to make the adjustment process easier. However, some new denture wearers tend to eat hard foods that could damage the dentures. Such activities could easily break the dentures or dislodge them.
