Foods To Steer Clear of After Receiving Dental Implants
Posted on 7/18/2022 by Dr. Castellon
Dental implants are the best replacement for lost permanent teeth. They give you the confidence to smile and the ability to comfortably eat, speak, and laugh. In simpler terms, they help restore your normal life after you have lost permanent teeth. However, after installation, dental implants need time to integrate with the jawbone. This means that you should avoid certain foods to prevent disrupting the osseointegration process. Here are some of the foods you need to avoid due to the risk they pose.
Foods You Should Avoid
Just like any other oral surgery, you should avoid eating hard foods that could disrupt the healing process. At this point, not only will your mouth be sensitive but also sore. During the first few weeks, the implant will be fusing to your jawbone. Therefore, eating hard foods during this time is dangerous because it can dislodge the implant and interfere with the fusing process. In some cases, the dental implant could come out completely.
You can also increase the likelihood of implant success and speed up recovery by avoiding sugary or acidic foods and drinks. Sugary foods are risky because they can lead to the presence of bacteria. When bacteria accumulate around your dental implants, it can damage them and reduce their efficiency. Furthermore, you should avoid acidic foods and drinks because they can erode implants. This will wear them down and distort their shape. It is also recommended that you avoid crunchy foods such as cookies, chips, crackers, seeds, and nuts. These foods can be hard and dislodge the implant.
Finally, it will help if you avoided chewy or sticky foods such as gum and dried fruits. Extremely cold or hot foods could also affect the osseointegration process. Contact our offices for more information on foods to avoid when having dental implants and how to take care of them.
