Branches of Dentistry in Prosthodontics

Branches of Dentistry in ProsthodonticsProsthodontics is among the branches of dentistry associated with replacing missing teeth and reconstructive surgery procedures of the soft and hard tissues. The most common approaches in prosthodontics may include removable or fixed crowns, bridges, and dentures. However, this branch of dentistry has various sub-branches that may end up confusing, especially if you lack knowledge in dentistry. Here are the main branches of dentistry in prosthodontics:

Maxillofacial Prosthodontics

Maxillofacial prosthodontics refers to restoring patients with deformities, disabilities, and deficits of the face, jaws, and surrounding soft tissue. This may be caused by genetic differences, diseases, and trauma. Typically, most patients will enquire about maxillofacial prosthodontists replacing their lost areas within the bone or tissues and rehabilitating their oral functioning, such as speech and chewing.

Fixed Prosthodontics

Fixed prosthodontics entails oral restoration using appliances that must be placed in your mouth. These restoration appliances may include; Onlays, inlays, crowns, bridges, and veneers. Fixed prosthodontics is not regularly removed and can only be placed or removed by a dentist. This reconstructive surgery helps in restoring one or several teeth. Also, it helps bridge areas where teeth have been lost, creating an aesthetic-looking tooth.

Removable Prosthodontics

Removable prosthodontics is concerned with removing the dental prosthesis for patients requiring teeth replacement for aesthetic and functional purposes. Removable partial dentures help a patient replace single or multiple teeth. Conversely, removable full dentures help patients replace all teeth in one arch. A removable prosthesis is recommended when the lack of teeth is substantial. Also, when the quality of the jaw bone interdicts, replace missing teeth with crowns and bridges.

Implant Prosthodontics

Implant prosthodontics is a section of prosthodontics associated with replacing missing teeth and connected structures using restorations attached to dentures. These dentures have a vigorous foundation for fixed and removable teeth that are made in such a way that it matches your inherent health. Implant prosthesis helps in maintaining bone after the loss of the tooth. This helps improve facial esthetics and the performance of removable restorations.
