Simple Ways to Prevent Denture Sores

Posted on 12/5/2022 by Dr. Castellon
Simple Ways to Prevent Denture SoresIt is normal to experience teething pain after getting new dentures. You may also experience sensitive gums and sores during the first few weeks. As much as the discomfort is almost inevitable during the first few weeks, there are remedies you adopt. Some of the things you can do to prevent denture sores include removing dentures overnight, cleaning dentures regularly, and eating soft foods.

Removing Dentures Overnight

You are more likely to have denture sores if you wear dentures all the time. It is highly recommended that you remove them overnight to prevent such conditions. Removing dentures makes it possible for your mouth to "breath" after a long day of wearing dentures. You should soak dentures overnight while you give your mouth space to recover.

Clean Dentures Regularly

One of the main causes of denture sores is the presence of bacteria. When you eat, food particles accumulate on your dentures. The continued presence of these particles will lead to the build-up of bacteria that causes infections. As a result, you will experience painful denture sores that can be very uncomfortable. Therefore, you should clean your dentures by brushing them at least once daily. If possible, you should also floss them.

Eat Soft Foods

The type of foods you eat when having dentures also matters. Eating hard foods exerts excessive pressure on the dentures that, in return, brush against the gums. This will lead to denture sores. Therefore, you should go for soft foods that are easy to chew. However, it is recommended that you avoid sugary soft foods because they could cause oral infections.

Use Denture Adhesive

Denture adhesive can help prevent gum pain. It does so by preventing food particles from getting between the dentures and gums. Furthermore, denture adhesives keep dentures in place and stop them from moving constantly. Such movements irritate your gums and cause denture sores.
