Dental implants function just like natural teeth while reducing susceptibility to decay. Even so, proper maintenance is required to keep the implants and the remaining teeth in good health. You can use these tips to properly care for and maintain your dental implants:

Daily Oral Hygiene

Practicing daily oral hygiene is prudent, whether you have natural teeth or dental implants. Ensure you carefully and thoroughly brush your teeth twice daily. It is also paramount that you floss once daily to remove debris and biofilm stuck between teeth. When brushing, ensure you do it gently to avert damaging the gum tissue.

When it comes to caring for dental implants, you may want to make small adjustments to the daily oral hygiene routine. You can utilize floss threaders since they help get between the implants to clean the areas. Small interdental brushes also help effectively clean the areas between the implants compared to traditional floss.

Regular Visit to the Dentist

In addition to brushing and flossing, it is crucial you visit the dentist for optimal oral care. The dentist checks the implants to see that no issues or concerns are arising. If there are problems noticed, the dentist can work on them to ensure long-term survival and proper functioning of the implants.

What if You Don't Brush and Floss?

It is prudent to understand the importance of cleaning dental implants. While implants may not be susceptible to decay, it is possible for them to develop plaque. If you fail to get rid of debris and plaque, you could risk having gum irritation and gingivitis. Not treated, gingivitis quickly escalates to periodontitis, thus contributing to bone erosion, gum recession, and possible failure of the implants. You could risk having a condition referred to as peri-implantitis, which is an infection of the gum tissue surrounding the dental implants.
